Reading Teams / Book Club is going really well! We are reading The Secret Garden, Time Warp Trio, Hiroshima, Chocolate Fever, The Westing Game and Frindle. The students have chosen their books and are reading aloud as a group. At the end of each chapter they are writing a summary. It's wonderful to see the enjoyment of reading and the students developing their reading and comprehension skills.

Congratulations parents and students! You made it to Second Quarter of 5th Grade! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the Parent-Teacher Conferences this past week. It was such a great opportunity to celebrate learning and make some goals for the coming months.
Homework
The homework checklist is handed out on Mondays and due on Fridays. Please note that homework has increased this quarter. It is wonderful to see the students becoming more capable and I want to keep them striving for their best. We need to get them ready for Middle School levels of homework, so keep working on those study routines with your child. At school this week we have been working on making new reading goals for Second Quarter. Please ask your child about their goals and talk about ways that they can achieve them.
Topics of study for 2nd Quarter include:
Upcoming Events
Field Trip - We have an upcoming Field Trip to the Ice Skating Rink on Friday November 18th.
Pie Day - Wednesday November 23rd (more details to come).
Christmas Celebration - The Christmas Program rehearsals are underway and we are looking forward to the performance on Friday December 2nd.

The 5th Graders have recently started writing letters with some Australian 5th Graders through a Pen Pal program. A big thank you to Mrs Serjeant's previous school, Toowoomba Christian College, for being so willing to connect. This cross-cultural exchange provides wonderful opportunities for learning and friendship.
Thank you!
Thank you to all the parents and students who made my birthday such a good day. Celebrating birthdays with children is so much fun!

The 5th Graders have been working towards their reading goals in Accelerated Reader by reading and completing online comprehension quizzes. We have 2 weeks left in this quarter to reach those goals. Please encourage your child to keep working towards their goals! The students have also been working on their Inca Projects in Social Studies. These are due next week and are looking really good already.
Buddy Reading program is going really well with the students in both 2nd and 5th grade developing their confidence with reading. When reading to someone we focus on accuracy (reading what is on the page), fluency (reading smoothly and with good pace), and expression (allowing our voice to be animated and change in pitch).

This week the 5th Graders have completed their MAP standardized testing and have really impressed me with their efforts. We also have completed some other assessments lately in Bible, Math, Social Studies, Spelling, Reading, Writing and Science. The end of quarter report grades are coming together and soon parents and students will be able to see their achievements so far this year. Parent-Teacher conferences will be coming up soon too, so I look forward to meeting with parents to discuss these reports.
Another special thing that has happened in 5th grade lately, is that we have started a new reward system using Class Money. They earn dollars and can spend them on classroom rewards including sitting on the sofa or purchasing stickers from the sticker shop. Completing homework, major assessment tasks and being organised all are rewarded with cash. We have employed 2 student bankers who manage the bank. Each student has their own wallet and they are already doing a lot of math to work out what they need to save in order to purchase the rewards they want. It is a really fun and motivating game.

In Social Studies, the 5th Graders have been learning about Aztecs, Mayas and Incas. We have a great series of history magazines for the students to read and learn about these ancient cultures. The students enjoyed reading with a friend and studying together before they completed their assessment quiz. Last week, we also celebrated all the birthdays in August and September with some popsicles. Thanks to one of our class parents, Yuji's mom, for arranging this special event.
